The Magical tree in my grandparents home.
If a tree does not bear fruits or
flowers but is green and has children of all ages on its branches –cant it be
called magical tree ? Behind this magical tree we had one big jackfruit tree,
two coconut trees, one mango tree and two big rose trees –one yellow and other
white rose tree—these rose trees was full of roses and we made huge garlands to
decorate our deity –hanuman and Saraswathi photos. We got some 75 to 90 roses
and made garlands and ajji would make beautiful garlands so heavy two or three
of us had to carry them. Magical tree which was ever green tree known as
‘kondamavu,’ botanical name commiphora caudata, and in English it was known as
the hill mango as it gave slight smell of mango or also called green commiphora.
It was there from many years and as it had branches so well organised as if it
was made to accommodate all of us of its branches. When we were not in the
garden enjoying its bounty we would be found enjoying sitting on it either
eating delicious ravaude (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSPR0FBkS-A)or
puriunde (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQcGKIkHf3o) or we would be playing
any game using toys like Channapatna toy –we grew up with these or we would be
crying after a small tussle with my brother or
cousins.

This was a tree with many memories but now I know the identity of this tree and
I recall how it was used for medicinal purpose –for our cows or dogs. On the top
branch you can see perched is one of my favourite aunts, and beside her my elder
brother Ravianna, one more aunt sitting under the tree with my newly born cousin
Arun (who now lives with his family in Germany).my elder sister standing beside
my aunt and one of mama –Sachidanada beside me so u can see seven of us. It was
a magical tree as it taught us many lessons in life –be it tree climbing or
playing in the shade of big trees, we realised value of planting valuable trees.
We learnt to climb trees and play around the garden and life was fun and
enjoyment and we were a closely knit family. Our whole garden had these plants
as fence and had lot of birds, bees, insects, colourful butterflies and my
“Perithatha” –my grandpas elder brother was a knowledge of home remedies and
shall devote one blog of how I learnt various lessons from him but relearning
all that with my present day knowledge of Ayurveda
